One more week of classes starting Monday; crunch time is upon us. Thankfully, my next project in Studio Fibers class will carry on into next semester, so there isn't a pressure to finish it within this next week!
For those who perhaps do not know, I am a full-time student at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF), and I am working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) major in Fiber Arts with a minor in Drawing (and a double major in Spanish...yikes...). I work primarily as a weaver (and weaving rugs is my present obsession), and currently happened upon a weaving technique called "shaft-switching." When one weaves, a pattern is created before-hand; shaft-switching allows the weaver to alter the pattern at any time within the piece, rather than maintaining a consistent pattern throughout. I have woven three 2'x3' rugs using this technique this semester (aside from three additional 2'x3' striped rugs), and plan on embarking upon much larger creations in the future by stitching together several pieces into one. The wool in the above photo is of colors that I've begun dying today for such a piece. I was given some pre-mixed dyes that needed to be used up (because waste is shameful!), and I worked to get some colorful, muted tones. I'm very satisfied with the results, though one or two of the colors will be over-dyed to achieve a richer color. Each color is one pound of wool, giving me ten pounds to work with in the next piece that will be approximately 4'x5'.
All in all, it's been a productive day, but I've got my work cut out for me this weekend!
Thanks for reading and have yourself an awesome day.
